Burn on Gloss White Laminate Worktop Repaired in Manchester

The damage

Olufemi was moving out of a rented flat in Manchester and had a burn of about 15cm on the white kitchen worktop. The burn needed to disappear so it wouldn't be noticed at the end of the tenancy and cost the deposit.

The photos made it look like a simple laminate burn. When I arrived, I found the worktop was high-gloss white with a glittery fleck running through it. Glitter isn't something I can recreate, so before starting I explained that I could put the fleck back in a grey that matches the overall colour, but it wouldn't shimmer in the light like the original. Olufemi was happy with that and asked me to go ahead.

How I repaired it

Heat damage on laminate always goes further than the visible mark, so I cut out all the burnt and blistered material and took some depth out so the filler would bond properly. Then I filled, sanded and primed the area.

The white base colour turned out to be trickier than it looked, and it took a while to get it exactly right. Once it matched, I airbrushed the base coat, painted the fleck back in by hand and sealed the repair with a gloss lacquer to match the shine of the top. The whole job took about 5 hours.

The result

The burn is gone, and from normal standing height the repair blends into the worktop. Olufemi was very happy with the finish, and the worktop was ready for the end of the tenancy.
