Burnt White Laminate Worktop Repaired in Mossley Hill

The damage

Faiza sent me a photo of one burn on her white marble-effect laminate worktop. A burn is usually the tip of the iceberg: the heat blisters the laminate well past the mark you can see. When I arrived there were several blistered burns along the sink run, and the joint next to them had swollen where water had got in.

How I repaired it

I cut out all the loose, blistered material with a Dremel and took a little depth out so the filler had something solid to bond to. Then I filled, sanded flat, primed, airbrushed a colour-matched base coat and painted the veining back in by hand. As I was already there, I offered to repair the swollen joint at half price, so Faiza got everything done in one visit.

The hard part was the white. The worktop sits right under a window, and natural light shows everything on a plain pattern. Black and yellow in the white weren't quite enough, so I added a touch of green to the base colour, my get-out-of-jail-free card, and it pulled the match in perfectly. It took a little longer than planned, about 4 hours in all, but it was worth it. I finished with a lacquer seal, buffed smooth so it feels like the rest of the top.

The result

The burns and the joint are gone, even under the same window light that made it so tricky.

Aftercare is simple: use a chopping board and trivets, clean with soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth, nothing acidic, and never scour the repaired area. Light use after an hour, normal use the next day.
