Scratched White Corian Island Restored in Deansgate

The damage

James has a white Corian island in his kitchen in Deansgate, about 80 x 200 cm. A cleaner had used a scouring pad on it, which left swirls and fine surface scratches all over the top and dulled the finish. On white Corian, you see every swirl when the light catches it.

How I repaired it

Scouring marks cover the whole top, so patching one area would never look right. I did an all-over refurb of the island instead. I sanded the whole surface with 180 grit, with no pressure, letting the sander do the work, so it came back to one even surface. Then I drew pencil lines across the top and sanded until they were gone, so I knew it was sanded evenly. I worked up through the grits to 800 and finished with a grey Scotch-Brite for a satin, factory-type finish. It took about 4 hours. It's the same process I use on every Corian worktop repair.

The result

The swirls and dull patches are gone, and the island has one even finish again, edge to edge. James was very happy with it and left a lovely review.

Care tip: clean Corian with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Avoid scouring pads and abrasive creams, as they're what cause these swirl marks. If your Corian or solid surface worktop has lost its finish, I cover all of Manchester and the surrounding towns.
